How Do Toddlers' Brains Support Word Learning?
H.O.W.L. Study (Hippocampal Organization of Word Learning)
Description
The UC Davis HOWL Study examines how toddlers' developing brain supports learning new words. Your child wil play fun games, explore new toys and learn their names. On another day, we may conduct a nighttime brain imaging session while your child sleeps in a cozy, child-friendly space with stuff animals and bedding. As a parent or guardian, you will be able to stay with your child throughout their participation. Your child will receive a book after each session, and families will receive $100 after the brain imaging visit. You may also receive a cool 3D model of your child's brain!
Study Activities and Requirements

Completing questionnaires, Toy identity and word learning
• 2 daytime in-person visits to our laboratory in Davis, CA (about 90 minutes)
• 3 at-home zoom sessions (about 10 minutes each)

MRI Scan
• 1 nighttime in-person visit to our Imaging Research Center in Sacramento, CA
Study Eligibility
-
• Children 20-36 months old
• Parent or guardian who speaks and understand English
• Children who are exposed to English at least 90% of the time
• Children with typical development (no diagnoses of delays, disorders)
• Children born after 36 weeks (not premature)
• No metal inside the body (for MRI safety)
